La Fondation Espace pour la vie renouvelle son partenariat philanthropique avec Rio Tinto
Montréal, le 29 septembre 2023 – À l’aube de la Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation, la Fondation Espace pour la vie est très heureuse d’annoncer le renouvellement d’un partenariat avec Rio Tinto, assorti d’une contribution de plus de 500 000 $ sur les trois prochaines années, en soutien à deux de ses projets majeurs : le Jardin des Premières-Nations et le programme des Sentinelles du Nunavik.
L’engagement philanthropique de ce partenaire de longue date permettra notamment de continuer à mettre en valeur le rapport que les Premières Nations et Inuit entretenaient et entretiennent toujours avec le monde végétal par l’entremise du Jardin des Premières-Nations, lieu de connaissances et de rencontres entre les cultures situé au cœur du Jardin botanique.
Le soutien de Rio Tinto permettra également à la Fondation de financer diverses initiatives en lien avec le programme des Sentinelles du Nunavik, un programme de science participative au nord du 55e parallèle piloté par l’Insectarium de Montréal. Depuis 2017, l’Insectarium accompagne des jeunes Inuit.e.s et Cri.e.s des 14 communautés du Nunavik dans le développement de compétences techniques et de connaissances scientifiques afin de documenter la biodiversité entomologique du Nunavik et de démystifier le monde des insectes.
Julie Jodoin, directrice d’Espace pour la vie souligne que « bien au-delà des aspects opérationnels rendus possibles par ce partenariat, ce soutien de Rio Tinto est essentiel afin de permettre à Espace pour la vie de poursuivre sa mission de recherche et d’éducation et de contribuer à la réconciliation avec les Premiers Peuples, notamment en mettant en valeur l’autochtonie au sein, et à l’extérieur de nos cinq musées ».
« Cette entente s’inscrit pour nous dans la continuité et dans la pérennité », explique Sébastien Fassier, président du conseil d’administration de la Fondation Espace pour la vie. « Rio Tinto est un partenaire philanthropique de premier plan pour notre Fondation depuis 2003. Sa contribution historique – qui dépasse 5 M$ à ce jour – aura permis d’appuyer de nombreux projets au sein de l’écosystème d’Espace pour la vie ». Rio Tinto avait notamment soutenu la construction du nouveau Planétarium en 2008, par un don majeur.

The Space for Life Foundation Renews its Philanthropic Partnership with Rio Tinto
Rio Tinto will contribute over half a million dollars in support of the First Nations Garden and the Nunavik Sentinels program.
Montreal, September 29, 2023 – On the eve of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Space for Life Foundation is pleased to announce the renewal of its partnership with Rio Tinto, with a contribution of over $500,000 over the next three years in support of two of its major projects: the First Nations Garden and the Nunavik Sentinels program.
The philanthropic commitment of this long-standing partner will enable us to continue highlighting the relationship that First Nations and Inuit people had and still have with the plant world through the First Nations Garden, a place of knowledge and cross-cultural encounters located at the heart of the Botanical Garden.
Rio Tinto’s support will also enable the Foundation to fund various initiatives in connection with the Nunavik Sentinels program, a participatory science program north of the 55th parallel led by the Montreal Insectarium. Since 2017, the Insectarium has been accompanying young Inuit and Cree from Nunavik’s 14 communities in the development of technical skills and scientific knowledge in order to document Nunavik’s entomological biodiversity and demystify the world of insects.
